How to fillet: Mackerel?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZD92283xjg

If you can't tell, I could use some work on explanations.

Nice and easy. Do you usually chill the Mack’s before filleting? How do you usually use the fillets?

Yeah chilled. Firms up the meat and makes the task much more feasible.

Usually just pan fry them with salt, pepper and serve with lime and Tapatio. Most of the time I keep these guys for my dogs though. My mutts love them!

Thread resurrection!

Do you catch mackerel that size locally?

Most of what I see people eating online are big like that, but even the bigger ones from the roving schools I come across are skinny, even if long. Anything you do to target bigger macks that works well?

Caught these guys on a 4" sinking jerkbait. Bigger lure = bigger fish. I've gotten an est. 3lb mackerel before too. Got that one on a 60g jig. They come and go. Location is pretty important too. The biggest ones I've gotten tend to come from kelp edges and deeper dropoffs.

Gotta chime in...

Couple years ago, coming back from work coastal, saw boils, had my surf rod in the truck.

Had no bait, threw a croc, made some small macks, pinned them on. Nothing but bigger macks, couldn't get past them. Kept throwing them back. Added some weight in hopes of a hali, kept getting big arse macks...

Kept 8 of them, fillet'd them, like a YT, this dude over analyzed, too easy.

Did them in a Hollandaise sauce, decadent.

Yanni, take it from here...

If you are ever in oceanside, bring some big Macs and I'll teach you how to do this. Only 2 cuts
Then I'll let you taste the best mac you have ever thought about tasting. 3 different ways
Instead of saying, that's a buick! You will say that's mackeral!
