Kurt, larger Halibut are Pelagics. Some venture out as far as the continental shelf in summer and winter and spawn in both spring and fall in the shallows. Just like WSB they build up their size and endurance in the bays before they venture out into the open water. You don't need to bay fish for them either. LJ is one of the best places around for catching monster versions of them. Just ask most of the Moyer tourney winners. If I could afford the time and money, that is where I would be every weekend. I keep a stick on ruler applied to my paddle and a plastic lip gripper for any fish I am not sure about. Unless fishing a tournament, I try to release everything under 30". I will have to post one of the gripper videos to show how "smooth" I can be .
