New to this, little help!

My friend had a serious stroke and gave me all his saltwater gear. Nothing fancy but all very usable. Several Penn 500 series reels. Suggestions on type and line capacity?

TIA

Thank You, we had just finished up his 28 ft. Sportfisher. He gave me the gear for helping him restore the boat and then sell it.
I have several Penns so i can set-up a few combos. I'll be starting in the bay.
Maybe try a 1/2 day boat.

My suggestion is to take it to a established tackle shop.

They can set you up.

Too many unknown here for proper answer.

Also go lurk hard on Bloody Decks. Search for your rods (e.g. "Seeker 270") and you'll get a dozen serious discussion on what line class each rod is best fished.

You can list your rod and reel combos here, too, and maybe people will chime in.

OR, like Mahigeer said, go to Squidco and tell them to set each one up right.

SquidCo is a class operation.

I have not had the pleasure of going there (I live in LA), but every year they provide the Kid's Derby at Shelter Island with a lot of bait.

Joey the main proprietor is a stand up guy . Can't say enough good things about the man and his customer service. He runs his crew to good standards too.
