Signal Flare

I was cleaning my garage the other day and found two road flares that are about 5 years old. Assuming they don't really "expire," are these the type of flares one might carry on a kayak in the event that you needed to signal a rescue craft of some sort? I know about flare GUNS, but what about these red flare sticks? Once you light them, they are water proof too right?

Seems like it would be pretty easy to accidentally melt a hole in your hull.

they burn super hot and the dripping sulfur will go right through your hull, probably not the best flare for kayaking

Could be good dog deterrent, like in the old Jungle Book movie where Mowgli ties the burning stick to the tiger's tail
