Seal hitches a ride on top of a gray whale. Video footage captured off Baja Peninsula

The amazing photo of a seal riding on top of a humpback whale in September now has a movie sequel. Incredible video footage was captured showing a seal riding atop a gray whale off the Baja Peninsula.
Whale of a Time, a website that shares “amazing wildlife footage” it captures on trips down the Baja California Peninsula, posted the video from a whale-watching trip that definitely took tourists by surprise:

Why did the seal ride the whale? Whale of a Time gave this explanation:
“We can only speculate, but the fact that the seal was quite young, was out a long ways from shore by himself and had quite a sleepy demeanor suggested he was just tired. Upon seeing something to sit on, never mind that it was a whale, he went for it.”
An expert in Australia had a different explanation for why the seal in New South Wales jumped onto the back of a humpback whale, which was captured in amazing photos by Robyn Malcolm that went viral.
In that case, humpback whales were in a feeding frenzy and Malcolm snapped off several photos only to discover later that a seal had hitched a ride atop a humpback whales. It happened so fast she didn’t see it happen, unlike the video.
Geoff Ross, coordinator for NSW national parks and wildlife service, said this coupling was highly uncommon and that the seal was probably trying to steal food, as reported by GrindTV in September.
“The seal was definitely cashing in on the whale’s ability to make the fish form into a bait ball,” Ross said.
“Humpbacks force fish into very tight bait balls, that means everyone can dart through the inside or the middle — anything that makes it easier to catch fish, seals will be involved.”
We don’t know if the gray whale in the video is feeding, and it’s difficult to determine the intentions of the seal, but evidence is certainly mounting that seals enjoy hitching rides atop whales.
