Backup Paddle - Kayak Fishing Adventures on Big Water’s Edge

I want to upgrade the paddle on my adventure.

I'll only use it when:
Launching/landing
Fishing in the kelp
Mirage drive breaks.

Any recommendations on a good paddle that won't cost much?

why do you feel the need to upgrade if you use it so little?

Same question? A stock hobie paddle is inexpensive and efficient I think?

Last night I used it for a while coming in and it seemed kinda crappy. I also heard that they break easiliy, which would be a safety issue if the mirage drive quit working in tough conditions.

Anybody else had problems with hobie paddles?

Hobie paddles are pretty bad. I'm going to chop mine up and turn it into a gaff.
I would just compare weights and pick one that's lighter than the Hobie.

Look at the Werner Tybe FG and the AT Odyssey SS Glass. Bother around 130.00 and quality paddles that will not cost you much but will be 100% better than Hobie paddle.

I went from a stock hobie to the AT Odyssey SS Glass, great paddle for the price. I like the ferrule that feathers, it comes apart but remains feathered to your setting.

that is true... my buddies broke while landing a few weeks ago.

Bending Branches have good paddles.

Werner's Skagit FG as well. All these are lots of paddle for the money.

the new Hobie paddles are pretty decent, from what I heard the older ones blades would easily break in the surf, the newer one has a bit of flexibility to it, Its actually not half bad and paddles pretty well.

Mines a 2009 model. Don't know if that qualifies as new, but I used to have a carbon fiber paddle with my wilderness kayak that was better in many ways.

I'll upgrade eventually but guess I don't need to rush. With the MPA going into effect I won't be going all that far anymore anyway.
