When I went out on Labor Day Sep 7th, there were whales all around me throughout the day. First there were massive tail slappers over the canyon from early a.m., then humpbacks were jumping from mid-morning on.

The tail-slappers were massive and literally sounded like cannon practice from a ship. The water spouts were magnificent.

There was a guy in a small boat or kayak following right at the side of a frolicking, jumping humpback. I was peddling hard but couldn't keep up enough to get close to them. The distance between us was growing. I was hoping to see the closeup photos here, but not yet.

I wonder if whales have the awareness and agility of elephants when it comes to not smashing things around them?

Conditions and opportunities are always changing. There are so many beautiful things to experience from a kayak.

Ouch! It looks like they weren't seriously hurt. I'm not sure how with a multi ton whale landing on them.

And the kayak seems to have stayed in tact. Pretty impressive.

Out of ALL the things they may think could happen to them on the water when launching that morning I bet a whale breaching and landing on top of them was not one of them!

If that had happened in LJ they would have close the beach until the aggressive whales left the area and banned the dumping of krill and herring out side the surf. Mike

Don't think it landed on them. That was the ultimate warrior reincarnated.

It didn't land on them but came damn close. They definitely got flipped by the pressure wave from its landing though.
