A letter to anti-fishers - Kayak Fishing Adventures on Big Water’s Edge

We kayakers, spearfishers, boaters, fishermen and women for the whole, would like to clarify something with you...

The reason we fish is for the enjoyment, the connection with Mother Nature, seeing the beauty of the ocean and all its creatures, seeing creatures in their natural habitat, and the fulfillment of putting food on the table.

We are conservationists, keeping only what we will consume. We do not kill indiscriminately, but rather we target that which we choose to consume.

We understand the need for regulations as far as reproduction goes, so we abide by those laws as we do want generations to come to be able to enjoy the bounties the ocean provides for us.

We release undersized fish, we abide by catch and size limits, and we participate in tournaments that are fundraisers for different causes, most notable is the Moyer tournament with proceeds going to the Cancer Society. In each of these tournaments, there is always rewards given out to those who collect the most trash from the ocean.

Most, if not all of us, would rather be providers to our families instead of buying fish at the store or going to restaurants. The reason being is that what we catch is fresh, and we know that the fish we catch has a fighting chance to survive, unlike the fish bought plastic wrapped at the store.

When you buy fish at your supermarket, ponder this...the fish you are preparing at home for dinner, plastic wrapped, was most likely caught in a net, with by-catch, has no chance of escaping, is flopped onto a deck, can't breathe, dehydrates, then is thrown into a freezer where that fish is flash frozen...the same goes for the fish you order at a restaurant.

Have you noticed how certain canned tuna companies have the disclaimer of 'dolphin free'?

We love to see dolphins, we love to see the sea turtle swimming, and we love to see our incidental catches released, healthy and more the wiser, to grow and reproduce...can the same be said for the fish you buy at your local market?

In closing, before you chastise people that may be more of a conservationist than yourself, remember and know this, we do respect the ocean and its creatures, and we want to see the denizens of the deep thrive.
