LJ 4/26 - Kayak Fishing Adventures on Big Water’s Edge

Fished LJ for the first time yesterday. Launched out before sunup and made a dozen macks/spanish. Trolled around till 1pm or so for no takers. I did end up getting my bait wacked by a thresher but it didn't take the bait. I heard a couple of yakkers came in with small threshers. What are you supposed to do when a thresher wacks your bait? I left it on freespool with clicker and went on paddling slowly like i was doing prior to getting bit. Went back and circled around but he was gone. In the event this happens to me again, any advice? Also, Is there usually that much bait around in the water. I tried throwing the yoyo and caught a big mack on the way down. Macks and dines everywhere.

I would just leave it after it gets whacked, they use their tails to stun/kill bait then go eat it.

Yeah, but will the bait stay on the hook after it gets "tailed"?

It's hard to say what increases your chance of hooking one of those little Ts. You're probably better of with the smaller bait - they seem more likely to eat it right away, skip the tail job. Given you've got the mac on, and that they are more likely to first slap your mac with the tail, I tend to think its better to have your reel in gear... Or flip it in gear as soon is you realize T is slapping your bait. The chance you'd snag it on the tail, one of the fins, or wherever is probably bigger than your chance that your bait will still stay on the hook, and that it will come back and eat it. But I don't know, it's all guessing.

Not to say you can't catch something on yoyo this time of the year, but it may be more beneficial to spend time throwing some lighter jig.

The bait is thick at LJ right now. That time of the year. It's usually not like this, but summer is coming - it is only getting better and better.
