Razor Clams

I've heard some people catch these for bait. I know you can get them at fiesta island, but are they safe to eat? Seems kind of far back in the bay.

I've seen videos online of people getting them at the beaches, but I've never of that here in the San Diego area. Only clams at the beaches are the pismo clams.

yes, you can dig them up at fiesta island. i would NOT eat them personally. they are usually found in black muck and are filter feeders. so.... not for me.

Any problems with the fish caught back at fiesta island? I've been told to avoid San Diego bay and the farther ends of mission bay for fish due to contamination.

I used to fish mission bay 40 years ago and we would occasionally take a fish home. Now I wouldn't take a fish out of either bays, but that's just me

I saw some folks over at Coronado, in front of the Hotel Del in about 3 ft. of water dragging their feet in the sand to find clams. Dont know what type they were. They were a little bigger than say a tennis ball.. Really cool looking. Black and white in color...These folks found about 20 of them in a half hour..I guess chowder might have been on the menu that evening..lol

bosshoss, those are pismo clams. I did it twice before. You just pretty just get in and move your feet around until you feel a stone, and its most likely a clam.

Cleaning and cooking is a bit of a pain though. Tastes okay in a chowder. Maybe I'll try fried clams the next time I go get some.
