2 nd time out Newport Beach

Got a late start and launched at 8 AM. A fellow kayaker helped me out on the beach and gave me some awesome tips.

Felt pretty comfortable in the bay so I said "the hell with it" and headed to the bait barge. Got a scoop of horse dines then headed to the end of the jetty. Hobie livewell worked great. Peddled to the kelp beds at Crystal Cove and threw some swim baits for about an hour and picked up 2 small calicos.

They I started feeling a bit green. Called some dinosaurs then decided to head back into the bay. Dumped the dines as they started to roll and threw the waxwing to no avail by the coast guard station.

It was now 1pm and I decided to head in. I dialed in the yak configuration a ton. Really dug the Phillips waterproof speaker. Nothing like fishing and good tunes. In my head I want to go for tuna or yt but, I really thinking handling small fish and getting more aquainted with my gear and Yak is the best thing. Big difference working in a confined space as opposed to the long range boats and pampered fishing I have gotten used to.

I definitely want to meet up with some more seasoned anglers and shadow them and soak up some on the water knowledge. I think making bait is a better idea than buying dines that are not cured very long. Seems like 4-5 macs are better than a scoop full of dines.

Good times.

You definitely played it smart with not heading out for the tunnies. It's tempting, but being here until the next trip is more worth it.

No worries

No worries about feeling ill by the Corona kelp. I can go miles all day long tying hooks and staring at knots out in 75 ft of water no problem but those quick swells in the shallows there will get me sick in 30 minutes every time.
