Love my trusty Penn Jigmaster! I think everyone just about uses braid with a short (5-6 ft ) fluorocarbon. Maybe more, let's see what everyone says!. I loaded mine up with 65lb braid. I think that's a popular size.

I have mine loaded with 50 lb braid to 9' of 40 lb fluoro, awesome reel. Doesn't have all the bells and whistles of newer reels but it's just about indestructible and can be broken apart and cleaned in no time.

thanks for the input guys. that's exactly what i want to do, load it up with braid and a short flouro top shot. do you guys use them to fly line dines or to throw irons? and ww, you're right, these things and nice and simple. i want to learn how to service my own reels and i figure these are good to start with.

I use it for fishing the bottom or fly-lining. Can't say I've ever thrown irons with it, always had other options to use, but I suppose it'd work just fine with some practice. It's a little bulky for my liking to be using it to throw anything repeatedly but to each their own.
