Pro Angler on Car Top - Kayak Fishing Adventures on Big Water’s Edge

There's a thread going on the FB Hobie Fishing page, but thought I'd ask here as well.

Does anyone put their Pro Angler (12 or 14) on top of their car for transport? Any special issues or considerations? Car or SUV or minivan?

I already haul a Hobie Oasis tandem on my Honda Accord. I have the Yakima round bars, Mako saddles, and hully rollers. I'm thinking of adding the Yakima Showboat or the Seattle Sherpa Roller. Right now, I've been strapping the oasis on the round cross bars, HULL DOWN, and the hull has gotten some minor dents. I'm thinking of switching it up, and sliding the oasis (or PA) up there, and then try to roll it over, HULL UP, onto it's top edges? Those seem more rigid and stable?

I haven't gotten a PA yet, but thinking about it. I'd probably get the PA12. Ideally, I'd prefer a truck for transporting, but wife is veto'ing that idea for now.

Here's a pic of a PA on a pretty new-looking, smallish sedan (pic from SunJammers.com in FL & FB Hobie Kayak Fishing page) ... so I guess it's do-able. Just wondering how much of a pain-in-the-ass it will be? Probably no different than my current set-up?

I roll my Outback top down on my Golf with just the cross bars. NO damage other than some black stains on the kayak and have had no issue even driving in high winds up to 85 MPH. I can barely feel that it's there. I can't see how a PA would be much different.

The scion xb has a huge/flat roof and it's low to the ground. Seems pretty ideal for car topping a yak. My buddy has one and it's easy load unload solo. I say because the car is boxy it's easier than the accord.

I was part of that discussion. I've seen plenty of PA's on top of cars, and Im sure it's not easy getting it up there. I transport my Revo on my car. The only issue I can tell you is the salt water get to your paint after a while. My car is a beater anyway. The revo is worth more than the car, so no big deal.

Make sure to strap the front and back of that kayak when your hulling a$$ down the freeway cause that 120lbs will dig into your paint. I learned from not tying down the front and rear when your kayak is 14ft. Those small movement creates the roof rack to move here and there but you won't notice them till you remove the rack. Sweet ride and love the papaya color PA.

I recently sold my trusty Durango because it was 14 years old. But it was a very good rig for hauling my PA14. Here it is up top, but before I put on the holddown straps and front tie rope.

A door mat prevented scratches and Hully rollers made it easy.

PA 12 on my xb Yakima set up

Made my mounts from 2" PVC pipe dirt cheap to make!!!

Scion, I have those same mighty mounts. They came with my hully rollers and saddles. Is there a reason u like the PVC better? And I don't quite get how u attach the mighty mounts to the 2" PVC?

Do you guys find the front and rear ties to be necessary? With my Outback on the Golf I just tie it down side to side and have never seen any slippage front to back even hauling tuchas on the freeway.

Where there is a will, there is a way! Here's my PA12 using a Yakima Whispbar to Thule Slipstream setup. I want a truck too, but this works for now. I would have gone for the PA14, but IMO that's pushing it for my particular roof top setup.

As for bow/stern tie down straps, I use them for 2 reasons. For the weight and cost of a PA, any additional straps to help secure my investment is reassuring. This is especially true when traveling long distances to SD/Mammoth. Secondly, I feel an obligation to not endanger other motorists around me in case of an accident. The PA with forward momentum will certainly cause physical/bodily damage.

It the car is wide front and back is needed to prevent it from swaying with the wind. I found having the rudder in front creates less noise when in the road.

Put that to the test today and for fun added a outback. Easier than side uh side and less noisy.

I saw this on the web and I added skateboard wheels to the end caps for mine. I also reinforced the end caps with smaller end caps inside them.
A whole new definition to a wheelie. Use your energy to fish not to power lift your yak. I'll post a picture of mine soon.
