Trip to San Quintin written by Katchfish

I made a four day trip down to the peninsula in front of San Quintin bay with Smoker Mike.
We traveled with some of Mike’s schoolboy surfer friends.

Lazy departure at 6:00 AM on Friday.

Easy and uneventful trip, until we tried to go up the hill from hell.

Mikes cheap-ass trailer hitch “T” rack shears off half of the way up H-F-H, sending the yaks flying off the port side of Mike’s Ford like two 1000 pound Napalm canisters off the wing of an F-4 Phantom.

We get some good Baja luck and reattach the unscathed red fish-killers back on the Ford.

We kill the hill and head to our camp site.

We spend the next two days relaxing, fishing, exploring, eating and drinking, to excess.

Easy surf launch and landing.

The fishing grounds were protected from the prevailing northern wind by the geography of the peninsula, and was fishable 24 hours a day.

On Saturday we fished next to the greatest concentrations of bait balls I have ever seen. So many baby greenbacks and sardines the pelicans were gorging themselves.

The fishing was good. Unlimited 10 pound bonito which pulled like Taz on crack. A good mix of incidental bass and rock fish.

The Megabait and Krocodile were the lures of choice. Mike nailed this fat white on Sunday AM casting a grande Kroc.

The mosquitoes were bad early in the morning and as the sun went down, but the bug spray worked well.

The sandy beach campsite reminded me of Hawaii.

In four days we only saw two cars, the first were some local free divers hunting for lobster (we bought some for Friday’s dinner) and Saturday some fisherman passed by.

This was a great fishing and Baja camping trip. We really enjoyed the location and the fishing. Mike and I are planning on going there over Labor day for four days. You need a four wheel drive to make it up the hill, but it’s worth it to get to the spot.

The fishing potential seems very high.

PS- We passed this business on the way out, any one need a trim?

Great report. Thnx.

I just want to relay an experience. We went down to Baja a lot in the 90's and still do. The San Quintin beach was where we got robbed (not at gun point, just things stolen while we were out fishing).

So just a precautionary note that some of the less-than-honest locals (very few, but they exist) do note where you are and will drop by and visit while you are not around.

Unfortunately, crack has arrived in Baja and San Quintin and El Rosario have been affected. Not to say you can't have an awesome trip but just watch your stuff and bring valuables on your yak or have someone stay in camp when you are out.

Awesome report. Peace.

Is that Mike the one that goes by Doodles? It sure likes like the Mike (Doodles) that I know. If so tell him that Eric (Stiffy's boyfriend) said hi and to give me a call to go kayak fishing some time.
