Jig stick Reel - Kayak Fishing Adventures on Big Water’s Edge

Hey guys looking for a jig stick reel again and im leaning towards the saltist 35h bg or the sliver in the equivalent size. Also the Newell 332. I am confused on what all the 332-5 p-332 etc. i, correct me if im wrong think 5 stands for gear ratio. I just want a reel i can cast nicely and will hold up. I know both of these reels are solid but want to know what makes one better than the other is anything. most likely 65lb braid with a 40lb mono topshot on a 9' stick

I have a Saltist 40h that is awesome, sweet freespool (could be better) and gorgeous drag.

I have a saltist 30 bg and love it.
And just sold my avet mxj to buy
The bg20. I've never had any problems
With the 30 and I'm sure it will be the same
With the 20

If you are fishing braid, I would stay away from the Newell. Since you are fishing braid, I would recommend a narrow reel, it is easier to keep the line flat when winding. The BG's are awesome, as are the seagates and even sealines. The sealines will have the best free spool, but don't have a narrow option, don't have a forward gearbox and click when winding. I have heard good things about the Penn Fathoms as well. IMO, it is hard to beat the saltist for a jig stick reel on a kayak.

Never really been a fan of diawa but a buddy let me use his saltist and I'm a believer now. Very smooth. Prior to that I would use the trinidad 16N which is the narrow model.

For our application I'm sold on the sealine series. The perform like a reel in a much higher price class and are durable. And God forbid the inevitable flip occurs and gear is lost you don't need a second mortgage to replace them. I own a 20 30 and 40. Word of advice, when tightening the clamp on a jigstick, don't over tighten. The graphite frame can torque and disengage the gears

i have casted the saltist 50 silver and like it but the size of that is too big that why i would prefer a smaller reel 35-40. I also like the torium 16 where does that weigh in

Torium 16 isn't bad, saltist is definitely better though. Much smoother drag. As to the sealine, not a big fan. The reel feels pretty weak and I have had problems when putting it in gear and the drag instantly loosening. I would just spend the extra $60

I warped the spool on my BG 30 using it for yoyo with yellows and amber jack. 50lb braid, 40lb floro and 12lbs of drag...maybe more sometimes lol.

I like the 40 for surface irons though.

I personally throw a Newell 338 with 40lb Mono but the sealines are good reels for sure. Hook and handed a lot of yellows on them. Solid reels.

yeah yesterday i got a 22lb yellows on the iron with the 50 silver. Its not mine and is in my opinion a little too wide for my liking but i love how it casted and i think i will just drop down a size or two from that and go with the 40 or 35. the guys were comparing the segates to the newells and said in his opinion he would go with the segate but the saltist is obviously a better reel.

In my opinion the Shimano Tranx is easily the best jig stick reel....power for days, smooth as hell and easy to cast over and over and over.....good luck

I prefer narrow spool reels

. I use a Newell 322 (Rare) or a Converted Penn 99 or 112 Tiburon for 25-30# mono and I bought a Trinidad 16N for Braid w/topshot.

Since you are fishing braid, I would recommend a narrow reel, it is easier to keep the line flat when winding. The BG's are awesome, as are the seagates and even sealines. The sealines will have the best free spool, but don't have a narrow option, don't have a forward gearbox and click when winding. I have heard good things about the Penn Fathoms as well. IMO, it is hard to beat the saltist for a jig stick reel on a kayak.
