Hooping Newport?

Hey everyone, this is my first year hooping and despite the slow start I am totally hooked. I have had mixed results at the Dana point breakwall so far, skunked a few times and took home 4 legals my last time out.

I'm wondering if anyone has tried hooping the jetties outside newport harbor. I'm not looking for honey hole specifics, but is it worth my time, or should I just stick with Dana Point?

I have hit Newport at the mouth pulling one two weeks ago and noting on saturday night. Saturday was rough with wind so I only set once and headed in. I'm thinking of going back on Friday night. I only have two bugging outings on my belt.

I've been wanting to get out around sunset and drop the nets around corona del mar where they have the lobster traps. I mean there's got to be something there. I'd be down to go out in a group. Friday night might work for me!

Bugging

Hey guys,
I am heading out this Friday, not sure about the exact place. I might hit up an oil island in Long Beach or Los Alamitos breakwall, i've grabbed back to back 5+ lb bugs there. I wouldn't mind hitting up Newport, I did great there last year but this year has been slow for everyone i've talked to there and my two times there early in the season.
If anyone wants company then let me know, I want to add some tails to my Super Bowl spread.

Looks like we got a group this Friday for Corona Del Mar. If we are in before 10 pm we can launch at the baby beach in balboa . After 10 I think it's the coast guard sation . I'm not sure on that one. Who ever is in hit me up with a text or call. I'm in rancho cucamonga if anyone wants to carpool

I wish I could make it out Friday but I already have plans. I'm going to try and make it out there Tuesday and Wednesday next week. Good luck out there.

For those of you that have hooped the mouth of the harbor, how bad does the surf get. I know that "the wedge" is right there.

I'm down to go to long beach if that's where the bugs are. Could drift for butts and sharks while we wait right? I live in riverside

The one time I did long beach I drove down slept in my van got on the water before day break and when the sun came out it was red tide. Not enjoyable.

Out of curiosity where is the wedge? I've been out of Newport harbor a few times and still am not sure, is it one of the jetties that makes the mouth, or is it a structure? I guessed it was the south side jetty but would like to know for sure.

Yeah, that's why I wanted some feedback. Apparently the wedge is known to be an unpredictable surf break where the swell bounces off the breakwall and then joins again to create a larger wave.

I'm assuming that on a normal day the far end of the north wall will be safe. I'll let you know next week how it works out.

Are squid running in the area? Anyone have any tips for fishing around there while we soak?

The wedge is the right side of the jetty known as Balboa Penninsula, excuse my spelling...from shore there is a wicked sudden drop shortly where the wave breaks boogie boarders love it.
