6/1 LJ Saturday Report - LJ Alternate Launch Conditions

Took a quick ride out on the kayak on Saturday evening, and looked
around South La Jolla area. Shot video of spawning sargo(again), dolphin
pods, and there were terns working a big area but the cuda or yellows
under them were not willing to bite. Plenty of private boats out fly-lining
sardines and tossing surface iron, but no biters that I saw or heard.

Current was real bad, ranging from N, NE/E wrong direction for my pet
bottom dwellers - but I managed to scratch up three which is more
than I'd imagined, given the crap conditions. Water 69 degrees and deep
blue on the outside.

ONE MORE CAST!

Waited a little too long to come in --- at dark --- making landing in the
opening between walls of 6' stacked kelp a bit harrowing. For those
asking about Big Rock/WindanSea launch conditions, check the cool
new 9 foot 'Black Diamond Cornice' drop to the sand. One of the reasons
I continually have this launch 'all to myself'

The Kayak Launch is right through the 'chutes' in the wall of stacked kelp.

I probably should have started BACK a little sooner ... I can hear the high tide shore break waves crashing and the beach is pitch black.

And I didn't bring a light.

Survived again! Night landings here are always full of suspense - using all your senses coupled with intuition, experience, efficiency, and dumb luck.

Getting the boat off the beach. Note the seaweed padding under the plastic to get up the rock. I do this exit all the time by myself, and it looks more difficult than it is.

And the guys at the shop wonder how my boats get so wrecked. I swear I'm not surfing the reefs with 'em!

No yellows, but something to tug on anyway. And then eat.

Cool sargo orgy. I've seen that happen twice before. Always a sight to see.

I was out there on Saturday also. Lots of action on the right kind. Water was blue as can be and conditions seemed perfect. Could not make any greenies- only Spanish. Hooked up 3 times - got freight trained 2 times and lost 2 big yellows to the kelp. Managed to land a nice one at 5:3O - 32lbs.
Summertime for sure! Saw a medium sized mako? Close to the point. Keep you feet in the yak, bit my big Mac clean in half.
