Any Green Backs - Bait Ideas

Any secrets to help the odds of catching green backs.....seems all I can get is Spanish right now. Thinking of putting away the sabiki and trying a little squid or worms. Any tricks ? No j don't have a fish finder.... Just winging it ✌️

You are thinking right, but add anchovies or sardines as they are oily and smelly.

They will attract the greenbacks.

Macks are like any other fish, they don't always want to bite. If you're fairly sure they're around putting a bit of bait on the sibiki can help. If you're searching and covering water trolling a small spoon can let you know when you find them. When I fish on a buddy's skiff we chumm cat food some times. Never tried that from the yak. If youre catching Spanish go ahead and keep some and replace them with greens if you find em. Cause then if you don't find greens you still have bait. Greens maybe better but Spanish are still good baits. I've caught yt in LA Jolla on smelt when that us all I could catch. Mike.

I remember Jaime getting a jumbo mackerel that got hooked trying to eat a Tady 45 he was trolling. An hour later, some dude on his brand new Kraken said he got his first yt on a jumbo 2lb mac! Maybe we should start just trolling surface irons to make bait! Lol

If I've been catching nothing but spanish macks I usually move. For some reason I usually catch spanish deeper and greenies closer to the top of the water column. Retrieve matters too. Sometimes they want the sabiki jigged up and down and sometimes they want it reeled in.

My buddy used spoons out there at LJ , caught a few big macks ..when using the sabiki rig, drop all the way to the bottom and work your way up a few cranks intil u find them. Very easy and use size 6-8 hooks

You can spend extra time trying for only green back, but why. When only spanish are biting just fill up with those. I have hooked provably as many yellows on spanish as on green backs although I also would rather use green backs. To me it's more about getting enough macs to stay ahead of the thieving sea lions.

The guy on the kraken is my buddy and he was using a huge mac so I can vouch that the story is correct. Those yellows don't care how big or small the bait is. I got hit on a bonito when that was all I could make. But they are right keep the Spanish and fish em they work.

When a Sabiki doesn't work a small spoon or krokodile usually will. The cat food works great to pull them in. So does a bag of bonito flake or dried shrimp that you can usually find at Asian markets. They pack up small so they don't take up any room at all and you can keep them on the yak since they don't go bad.

I haven't done much mac fishing from my kayak, but a mac is a mac and I've found that a small knife jig sometimes gets them going. 3/4-1oz. Flashier the better from what I've found.

Also, try adding this small bait cage to the bottom of your sabikis with some kind of smelly bait.

Today I had luck with a glow in the dark green 8 sabiki and a blue and black spinner bait on the bottom. Caught a nice green back and couldn't keep bonito off of it.

seems like greenies have a lot more action than spanish. that said, make lots of spanish and change baits often if you can not make greenies.

And drill a few 1/4" holes for better flow. I'm going to try this tomorrow.

Online unfortunately? You can probably get it locally if you shop around some mom and pop Asian tackle shops.

I overlooked your post at first Reel Anxious. Yeah these are cheaper alternatives and work well in their own way. I've seen these for cheap at Asian markets maybe less than a buck each.

And don't get too locked in on just Green backs. On my last trip I caught Yellows on Jack mackerel (aka Spanish) , Green back and a 12 inch Bonita.

I think the water bottle idea has possibilities.

What about a can of cat food punched full of holes with an old fashioned punch-type can opener? clip your line to the finger-puller on the lid.
