Bait sucked at the pier under the lights. Got 3 pornstars and headed out in the darkness. I was off the hotel at grey light in ~60' of water on the kelp line. I saw some good looking swirls but wasn't ready. Saw a boil and fired off a good cast. As the iron dragged over the perfect looking footprint I saw the swirls turn and follow it. Line went tight and...it didn't feel right.

While I am dealing with it a bit spot of breezed through and boiled on bait. I thought a hooked mako required full attention, plus my iron I would toss was already occupied. I eventually used my gaff to pull the iron from the mako. It seemed to take forever. It didnt' help with the 8' jig stick, and the mako going airborn and then swimming at me with its mouth open. Mako swam away unscathed. I never saw the yt again .

Some guys paddled right by the breezing and boiling yt and didn't even notice what was happening . The rest of the day was spent losing my bait one at a time to snags in the kelp. uphill current, but lots of kelp on the surface.

That iron is responsible for all my surface iron yt this year. It just works, plus I don't like releasing a fish with a jig hanging off its face. At one point I got the gaff around the iron hooks and pulled, but the shark took off and ripped the gaff out of my hands. It took a couple attempts. I wasn't even going to try it with my pliers . This one was bigger than the little pups that have been around.

crazy

Thats crazy I honestly hope I dont have to encounter this. Some mako might have to live with a little more iron in it's blood.
