there are two positives in this adventure, the first is no clean up, the second is i didn't get skunked. You can't get skunked if you don't actually get to fish.

Forgot my seat once and gave myself a sore back from peddling around while sitting on a folded up towel. Made a checklist on my phone. Also added items to do the day before like charge batteries, chop up bait...

Sounds like a lot of us have done the same. I went to Dana Point one time and got everything loaded on my kayak and got down to baby beach. Took my wheels off and went back to the car to put them away and to get my pfd. No pfd, left it on the hook in the garage. So I had to be extremely careful that day and was very lucky that I didn't have any need for it. I'll never forget my pfd again!

A few weeks ago I got everything unloaded off my car at Newport and had everything on the kayak ready to take it down to the Coast Guard Beach and then discovered that I'd forgotten the seat. I looked around the car and then remembered that I'd left it hanging on a hook next to my pfd. Fortunately I wasn't far from home, so after taking all of my stuff down to the beach, I quickly drove home and got it. But at least I didn't forget my pfd!

Happens to the best of us. Some, more than others......

I would like to add my 2 ct. if you do not mind.

I have left rods and a dolly once when I went to Catalina. I had to drive 45 min. in a heavier traffic going home than getting to the terminal.

I lost fishing time, but fortunately, Catalina Express is good about not charging for missing the boat.

I even had one of my famous lists and had checked the items out. Now I have a different list and only check the item AFTER it is in the SUV.

Your experience will be part of you fishing outing.

Have a laugh about it.

I like developing/purging checklists for various purposes - kayak related, fishing gear, personal items, support tools and backup items that remain in the van, picnic/camping supplies, bug-out bags, etc. It's so easy to have these lists at my fingertips in my iphone.

As a pilot I learned to use checklists in my formative youth. It's a good procedural habit to develop so it becomes automatic. Especially for those of us who are gifted with rip-roaring ADHD or who jump up and hit the road early before we are fully awake (eye-roll).

I also prefer to pack, bundle and stow everything in my kayak the night before so I don't waste time in the morning. It rolls out of the van and into the waves effortlessly without thinking.

I let nature take it's course as I come to life slowly in the mornings. I'll become fully functional with with my first bursts of adrenaline when I'm on the water. At that point it's too late to go back for anything I forgot :-)

Dude, that's sucks big time. I've done that to. Sure it wont happen to you again. I Showed up to LJ w/o my paddle. I chilled out n drank a cup of coffee until one of the yak rental shops opened n borrowed one of Thiers. Beat the drive back home. Mike

if it would have been later in the morning I probably would have rented a paddle but at 6am it's a long wait until businesses open. I won't do it again, I put my paddle back in it's normal spot.

It's been mentioned a few times but I use a checklist as well. It's saved me many times!
