Bicycle Built For Two

I am ready to get a tandem for the Charters, unfortunately I cannot afford the PA 17.. Adventure too big also for my storage reasons. I am wondering what some of you HOBIE Tandem Kayak Anglers feel would be a best bet for me?
Sometimes I might take it solo. Which model performs better in these instances? (I saw a guy the other day in LJ who carries a kettlebell up front to offset hullslap while solo. I guess I can always use a forkie or two to ballast it..)
Hows you say, BWE?..
