FWIW, I have the Tekota 500 and it is my "go to" reel for trolling or bottom fishing for medium sized critters (Lings, cabezon, etc.). The drag performs really well, and the action is... well - its Shimano smooth! (I don't recommend it as a casting reel, though).

I agree with you coming straight out the box...my bearings came dry so I did a full break down and lube/tune and now it cast almost like my calcutta 400's

Ah. I lubed mine thinking the same thing and when I pulled it apart, BOING! that damned little BB on the end of that spring came flying out and I lost it.

Been meaning to send it back to Shimano for an annual service one of these years... It still works fine - the drag wheel is just a bit wobbly.

As for casting, I guess I'm just prejuidiced against level-wind reels for casting, but that's probably because I pretty much suck at casting conventional reels to begin with....

You encountered the "Trinidad Surprise" on the Tekota....there are a number of write-ups to counter that. I think shimano's site has a trini breakdown and how to use a toothpick to prevent that popping out to never never land.

OK, thanks guys for the product endorsements....

I just want to sell it though. Grego, a 6-pak of Olde English 800 to Cabo and a guided trip to the hallowed Hali grounds and it's yours....

But...Cabo has to drink the talls before the launch for the tails...what a tale...

Jorge, you're lucky the Mods don't install a BS/Old Post Debugger Secret Post Count Deleter, one that for every BS post, or response to an old thread (esp. ones over 2 years old) they deduct from your post count total. Say, tag you -234 towards your post count...

You'd be sitting at something like -1,294...
