Got to the launch at about 6am and found really nice conditions. Pretty glassy and flat - easy launch. I made my way out and noticed the bait tank was acting up and couldn't get power to the pump, so I filled the tank up manually and went to make bait. Spent about an hour catching about a dozen good size bonito on a 6lb trout rod was fun but not what I was looking for, so I kept heading out and ended up with four spanish, no greenies for me. Figured I better use these guys before they perish, so I started trolling. Made a couple loops and finally got hit around 9:45am. Fish wrapped me around the kelp for a while! After about 20 mins, I figured it was gone and was debating cutting the line. Then I look and about 20 feet down... I see color, so I start lumberjacking with the gaff and muscle the mass of kelp to surface and sink the gaff.

F&G researcher was on the beach when I landed and took weight and measurements. 37" and 21 lbs after bled and gutted.

Much thanks to the gentlemen in the outback that took the pictures for me. Sorry I didn't get your name. Thank you!

Is that a 8' Sabre rod you got there? I have one myself but never used it. Does it get the job done?

Good eye. That blue and yellow is hard to miss. It is a Sabre 8' 20-40. I just recently switched out my seagate for my older saltist 20 on that rod to see how it worked throwing irons. Its not a $200.00 rod by any means, but it works for me. The other rod is a prosabre 8' 20-40 with a sealine 40 that I use for live bait.

Both rods were less than $50.00 each @ Big 5. I believe they normally run around 80 or so, but I get them when they're on sale from 39.00-49.00 and add the store coupon.

It seems like a couple times a year. The big 5 on fletcher parkway just had some on sell last week.

Nicely done. I spoke to you that day. I was the guy in the brown trident losing sabikis left and right from bonitas.

Hey Gerry,

Thanks!
It was nice speaking with you on the water. Yeah those bonito were fun, but pesky. As I worked the outside I found better bait or at least less bonito.
I don't have a fish finder, so its just polarized glasses keeping an eye on the water and covering a lot of ground for me.

Hope to see you out on the water again!
