Lake La Jolla 1/27

As You may have surmised from the title of this thread, the conditions in LJ today were far from challenging. It was spectacularly beautiful day on the water. As nice as I have ever experienced. Small surf, light breeze, 75 degrees in the air, 59 in the crystal clear water.

I only saw two other yakfishers out today. Jay was working the kelp with some sand bass success as I passed him by mid morning. A little while later, Ryan paddled in from somewhere over the horizon. He had been on the water since before dawn and, except for some bait had nothing to show for the day. Thanks for the squid Ryan.

I did not have very high expectations for the fishing part of today's trip. My modest expectations were met. Bait was easy to catch but nothing else. I spent most of my day honing my squid catching skills. The freezer is now stocked.

There were lots of birds, both in the air and on the water. A huge pod of small dolphins raced through the grounds a couple of times. The seals were hovering near by but did not give me any trouble. Unfortunately, I did not see any whales today.

I think I caught my limit of squid eggs. While bouncing a mega bait off the bottom I alternated between snagging egg sacks and mackerel. Never anything bigger however.

I did see one interesting thing. On my peddle out, I floated over a small piece of bull kelp with a cluster of squid eggs attached. This must have broken off near the bottom and floated to the surface. For those who have never seen squid eggs up close and personal, here you go.

Supposedly we have another couple more days of this beautiful weather. I cannot offer much encouragement about the fishing prospects but if you just want to play tourist and enjoy a great day on the water, I highly recommend that you get out soon.

That is cool - thanks for sharing.
I noticed from the web-cam there seems to be minimal surf breaking. Makes me want to be there. Lucky you were able to get out there.

It was my first time fishing La Jolla. I guess I picked a good day. Grilling the bass as I type. Very nice to meet you, Bob.

Nice report Bob.

I like that pic.....pretty much sums up the last year, squid EVERYWHERE!!!

Where you able to get squid infront of the condo or did you only find them past the condo?

As for words of encouragement - the current seems to be moving the right way again!

Skally,

I am not very good at finding or catching squid. I picked up a few all over the place but never found a good spot. I snagged tons of eggs however.

One strange thing. I was using a candy catcher rig weighted with a mega bait. I never got a squid on the candy catcher, only on the mega bait, one at a time. Of course, I did not find the motherload like what you posted the other day. Any thoughts?

I was hoping to see a pic of the horizon...even though Lake La Jolla pics are posted often, it never gets old for me. Thanks for the report.

That must have happened when I was relentlessly getting towed through the kelp on Wednesday---three times!

And with the conditions expected to hold, I know exactly what I'm doing tomorrow. Maybe I'll bring the video camera and write a fishing report of my own. Maybe.

Great Photo and thanks for sharing.

Bob, You are always a gentleman and very descriptive with your posts. Check-out my Good News MLPA post in General Discussions Section.

Thanks,

Kurtfish, SUP on a PA is the best way to chase the whales.

Bob,

That photo is insane! And I've always heard that
rocky ledges along fresh sand bottoms are the spawning
grounds. Now we know better.

I wondered the same thing. I do not have a clue but I did not see anything munching on all the egg sacks I snagged yesterday. Even the gulls did not seem very interested.

I think there's supposed to be something toxic with squid egg sacs to other fish.

Consider it a practice day Bob. Won't be long before we see the start of those football field size Yellowail boils again.
