Newport Harb 2/22

Met up with CheapPelican and Will Novotny at the coast guard station , started off on the docks then to the parked boats , we picked up a few bass and a cuda.

Will called it around 9:30 so Chris and I worked our way towards the mouth, Chris picked up a 19 inch Halibut it slowed down a little after that, we decided to go outside the harbor near the kelp chris got a few bass on 3 inch swimbaits.

Chris took me far out of the mouth , that was a fun experience bigger swells and boat waves ..first time experience for me.

Busted out the sabiki caught a few mac's and smelt , we tried for some bigger Hali's i did get raked on the mac but other than that rest of the day was a few calicos near the jetti and docks....ended the day around 4ish, id say some variety and met some cool guys ....had a blast.

Thanks for the report. Sounds like a great day on the water. How'd you like the yak?

It gets the job done but , I do want something a little bigger with compartments , also seeing Chris's Hobie and seeing how he's able to troll and do things while hes paddling kinda nice but that's in the future.

Not a bad first fish from the yak in the bay! On 6#

Weather was perfect. Lite breeze, cloud cover on and off.

Making bait (in and outside of the jetty) was impossible at first but when the tide was on the up swing schools followed. We finally got a half dozen mid sized macs outside the kelp by the arch. I trolled one on a drop rig around the area where Brian's got raked but got nothing. I also cut strips also for nothing. In the Jetty Brian loaded up on 9" smelt and i made a couple drifts through the jetty but there were no takers.
