strip paint off a kayak - Kayak Fishing Adventures on Big Water’s Edge

I got my kayak used and the guy that had it before me painted it a dark green. Well the color matches the ocean pretty well and just thinking its not very safe and the paint has been worn off and scraped off from use 8n lots of places. I want to remove the green and painting over it seems like it would just make it look worse any suggestions?
