Hooked a whale ....

Fished La Jolla yesterday and this whale I was admiring from Distance got way too close for comfort! The last time it surface it was around 15-20 ft from me. Scared the crap out of me and almost had a heart attack... Because of the panic and rush I forgot I had a bait in the water. I was quickly reminded by a screaming reel.

Im guessing that it got caught in a fin or something. For a second the fishing Part of me thought about going along for the ride, but I decided to cut the line instead.

Even with the scare it was a great day on the water it I did catch a new fish that I can check off my San Diego list .Both Lingcod were released and swam away nicely. I'm still going to take a couple weeks off from la jolla haha.

Tony thanks for taking the picture with my Ling.

Wow crazy I'm thinking I woulda held the spool hoping it would break at the knot. Having that much line hanging off of it might become a issue especially spectra cutting into that beast

You're probably right it was split second decision. I was pretty shook up and wasn't able think out my options very well. That spool was spinning pretty fast lol

That's pretty awesome.

One of those those grey schoolbuses popped up from nowhere about 15-20 feet off my bow once... I almost jumped out of my waders.

When I read this post I had to laugh because the same thing happened to me on 12/31/13. I posted the story on BWE and a video on U tube titled "grey whale off La Jolla 12/31/13". The whale swam right at me from over 100 yards away and came 15 yard in front and then came up 20 feet to my left, but not before taking my mackerel and line, after engaging the reel it started to take me for a ride. I quickly reached for my knife and cut the braid. A still picture taken from my 1080p video of the whale going back down shows my line comming over the top of it's fluke just before cutting the braid. La Jolla is full of such great experiences. If you want to see some of those pictures check out my album on BWE. Great story Oxbeast1210.

They certainly aren't scared of us. It hardly even made any kind of wake. I wasn't scared it would roll me but I was holding my cell in one hand and my non-water proof nikon in the other so I was afraid if it bunped me I migh drop one or both. I made some noise by kicking the deck a little so it would know I was there and it did veer some to my left, otherwise I think it might have come up like less the 10 feet from me and that seemed a little too close for confort.

Ox, wow what a story. We saw the whales from a distance, starting paddling towards them but she got a little queasy, so I decided to turn back to keep her day perfect.

Dang, nice lings and too bad out of season. I still have not caught one myself, it is still on the list.

Nice meeting you and what a cool day it was.
