Older outbacks

I'm looking at an older outback from probably 2001. Were there any issues in those early years to look for? Is there a simple way to translate serial numbers to model years? And where does one find the serial number?

Thanks for any info you can share. I'm looking to trade up from my x-13.

My buddy got rid of his earlier outback because it was too tippy. He's much happier with the newer outback he now has(I think it's an 08)

The original Outbacks are not the most desirable, that funky recess behind the seat, can't use their livewell, small bow hatch, that 10 year old smell...........

I know where you can buy a 2011 for about $600 off of new

I saw your slightly used one. Very tempting, but as good a deal as it is, it still exceeds the holdings in my discreet cash account.
