Thinking of getting a bed extender for my 2002 f150 supercrew with short bed. I have trident 15 and sort of a work to put that on the roof rack. Is there any law saying how far something can extend from the truck bed? And what's a good bed extender?

Thanks a bunch. I did buy the bed extender. It turns out that I can transport a Kayak just over 15 feet if I want to. My truck is 19 feet long. The Bed is 6.5 feet. The Malibu X-Factor is 14'4". So by my fuzzy math, I would have 7 feet 10 inches over hang but I am allowed 9 feet. So I have 14 inches to spare!

Xfactor - 172 inches
Truck bed - 78 inches

XFactor - Truck = 94 inches overhang = 7 feet 10 inches.
Allowed - 108 inch overhang

I can find a kayak that is 1 foot 2 inches longer......lol

The way I understand the law as it applies to me:

My F150 has a 6' bed and a 120" wheelbase
My Malibu Stealth is 14'4"

A load can legally extend from the rear of my truck (not counting the tailgate when its down or a bed extender) no more than a length of 2/3 of my trucks wheelbase.

My wheelbase of 120" divided by 12 equals a 10' wheelbase.
My 10' wheelbase divided by 3 equals 3.33' times 2 equals about 6' 6".
My 6' bed plus the 6' 6" allowable overhang gives me a total length of 12' 6".
My kayak is 14' 4" so it would extend 1'10" past the legal limit.

Ive seen people do it but I dont want a ticket so I dont.

My advice..... check with CHP yourself to be sure.

Not more sturdy than the one I'm selling

The guy who made this is a professional Truck driver and welder. He had a an X-Factor that I bought from him, and his truck had the same length bed as we have. Don't buy the extender from Harbor, you can save money on this one and get a great support. It already has reflective tape on it. $35

I have transported my kayak many times, morning, noon, and at night. I have had CHP, La Mesa Police, and others see me and not do anything. I always have a red flag attached to the back of the kayak, plus the reflective tape. Something I have been thinking of doing is getting a bike light that flashes red and also hooking that on for added red lighting. I'll give you all the straps that I use and you'll never have to worry about your kayak going anywhere.

I just purchased a OK P13, and the bed extender worked out great for me and my Tacoma! I was thinking of roofing my yak but it looked like a total pain in the butt (and back). Even with my 25% off coupon at HF the $35 one Jimmy is selling is better deal.
