Newport Rockies 3/16/14

Launched at 7am at the CGS. Made some greenies outside the entrance but never used them (safely released ). Got on the spot around 7:50 and had my limit of Rocks by 8:45. Saw lots of guys out there this morning. Sorry I didn't swing by to say hi. I think I've met some of you before. Once I had tacos for the family I was stoked I could go in early so I could get home to my 4yo. Finished up the morning with 8 decent Reds, 1 nice Barber Pole and a kicker Copper, maybe 6 lbs? Thing had some shoulders on it. Met King Arvil & crew back at the launch. Nice meeting you fella's! Hope you did good. Here's some Rockfish softporn...

Yeah. I use to use them a lot. Now I break them out when the bite is slow. They definitely work well. With the small hooks on them I get a lot of smaller fish though. Not a problem anymore as I bought one of those Roklees rigs. Works perfectly.

I was out there too. Not as lucky/skillful as you but I picked up a nice red the headed back over to the kelp where I picked up a fat sculpin. One of my friends picked up a very respectable sand bass out at the rockpile.
It was a good day to be on the water.

Nice meeting you at the launch RJ, with a toad Copper to get us pumped! We got out there, found he schools, but they didnt seem too hungry. Seems like they only bite for breakfast. Weather was beautiful though, and we got visited by the DFG & 2 huge Grey Whales, epic site!

When you guys get out there, do you drift, or drop an anchor down? My first time out there I found the canyon. Jumped from 200 to 280 ft fast, started messing with my rigs, next thing I know, I drifted back to 150 ft. Any tips?

If you have a FF and GPS, use it to stay over your rockpile. Can't really give any advice if you don't have those two.

I just have a basic ff, which is how I knew my depth. Considering your question, I'm assuming you just drift over your spot and use the gps to stay on point?

Correct. With larger areas or if you just want to be in the ballpark you can use your FF in conjunction with lining up landmarks at the foreground and background perpendicular to each other. I know people have done that in LJ to figure out when they're out of the reserve.

Oh, forgot to mention. If you don't have a GPS and you have a smartphone. Buy the navionics app. I've used it before I had a GPS. A little bit tough if you don't have a mount and you're having to hold it in your hand.
