Islander June 4/5-2010

Well we had good weather overcast all day but light to medium wind from the Southand and as usual great crew-there is simply none better at the kayak mothership drill-great food and plenty of it. Service as usual smooth and professional and kind of crowded with 26 anglers/divers, but all went according to plan except the fishing for me. The swim step entry to the kayak was as smooth as it can get and easy for all skill levels and two skiffs allowed them to run anywhere and help requests were handled immediately in every case.
The Calicos as usual were hungry and some constant action. I heard reports of 7+# and over 50 bass for some-that's quite a day. Without trying hard I got over 20 calicos but not exactly what I was chasing- and (need halibut smilie Adi).
Yes, Dave lost at least three flatties and one right at the boat-I need a Bosnian fishing clinic I guess
The usual suspects abord and some new faces-everyone seemed to get along great and most I am sure will be back, so lets all keep supporting the ISLANDER.
Tell your friends about it and show them the pictures that I am sure are about to get posted here-
Jackpot fish was huge halibut but that's another anglers story to tell
Thanks OEX and Brent for the $50.00 donation to top off the jackpot.

Dave

here's a couple of my calicos. I was hell bent to throw the slugs, and coulda caught more maybe, but nothing compares to that slug fishing

islander rocks

was determined to get as much fishing in that one day as I could. and I'm sore as hell today!!!

can't wait until next year.

it was great to fish the Islander (again)...
Rob, congrats on the new PB...
A special thanks to Kerry (not sure of the spelling)
for supplying us all with the BUGZ Custom Baits
and jig heads...way cool!
as for personal best calicos...
I was only able to tie mine...
not my best but still still a beast...
a modest 6.75 lber...
just can't seem to hit the 7 lb mark...
maybe my scale is rusty or something...
yeah that's it....
any hoo...
lots of good bass to be had....

for me, swim baits were the hot ticket in the morning and
then surface iron Tady 45 in the afternoon....
Pierpont got about 4 or 5 of these 6.5 lbers....
and take note of the BUGZ bait hangin' out of the mouth...they do work...

then we both got one at the same time, double trouble...
Mine was a 6.75 lber (my left hand right)...
and Mark's was a 6.5 lber on the Boga(my right hand)...

the biggest fish Mark got (and the fish that took my five dollars) was
Mark's 7.75 lber...what toad....

So, apparently I never knew what "bass fishing" really was until this trip.

This is while still waiting on "Mr. take my sweet ass time Rider" to show up with his yak.

The crew was amazingly efficient.

I hooked up into something big that pulled me around for a short while before unbuttoning. Im thinking white sea bass? But then got bored and went to the inside after yo-yoing for a calico.

Tried nuclear chicken jerk shad for a few bites. Then switched to camo and... game on! Every cast in every direction would come up with a bass. Broke off 20 # twice, so had to tie on a 30 # topshot.

Holy calicos batman!

That was mostly the fish before lunch, stopped taking pictures because... well, I was busy catching fish!

lunch time:

fishing grounds:

guys working the kelp:

dinner:

end of the day: biggest fish was 36 # halibut

No yellows showed up to play, but it was a blast! great seeing everyone and meeting new people. The Islander runs this trip so well, very cool.

Islander reports-

Thanks for the great reports and photos-Yes we were at San Clemente Island and all it amounted to was some guys having their best bass day ever in terms of numbers with some chunkers to go along with the multitude of dinks.
I am sure some more photos are coming-I hope-
My camera never was around anything good to shoot
Big thanks to Mr. Bugz for the awesome giveway and those that used them to keep those photos coming with or without the BUGZ.

Dave E.

Islander Trip

It was a great one! I met some really cool people. Congrats to Joe for landing a nice Halibut. I heard him on the radio and jammed over to him to snap some photos. If anyone ever gets a chance to fish with Josh aka Yakrider, Mark and Rob you have to do it. Those guys are great fishermen and they are fricking funny! I never laughed so hard in my life. Here are some photos.
