VHF radio? (other safety gear you take?)

Hi all, Totally new to Kayak fishing and hoping to get some insight on safety gear. Is there a recommended VHF radio? Any other safely gear recomendation? GPS?

I read this and seems that some are not recommending vhf, post is 5 years old though.. Any help appreciated.

Vhf radio, water resistant or in a dry bag. I rarely use mine. But it's nice to have. Of course always wear a PFD. Finally, go with a buddy. Play it safe until you get the idea.

Other stuff:
Fish finder with gps, sun block, hat, whistle, water, food/snack, phone in dry bag, leash everything, keep your eyes open.... dont assume boats see you (yes they have to yield to you but why take that chance), know your mlpa and other regulations on species and size.

Have fun!

My fishing vest is a pfd so I always have on my pfd.

I keep a sonic whistle that doesn’t need a pee to work.

I like to keep my paddle in my lap for slapping away seals and tipping prevention.

As already mentioned a Kayak fishing PFD (has a recessed back padding for comfort), a waterproof floating VHF radio w/GPS (if you can afford the extra feature), a safety whistle, a waterproof light, and a flag on a pole (such as a Yakattack visipole) preferably with built in light, for safety when it get foggy, a self rescue step ( for getting back in if you fall overboard and are alone) can be bought or make your own.

I've recommended, and been quite happy with, the Uniden MHS75 in the past. They're not crazy expensive and waterproof. They advertise as floating... I actually had one turn upside down on its clip without securing the lanyard, and it sank to the bottom out at San Clemente :) The company was actually cool enough to send me one for free just for asking.

PLB, Marine radio, PDF and whistle. Secure your gaff and remove hooks before landing in the surf.
