Its the versatility of it all. 100yds of mono would be good for marlin and bigger grade tunas,whereas, 100ft of mono would be better for more inshore fish,say yellowtail,t-sharks,and such. If one wants to fish near structure or kelp shorten the topshot or replace all that mono with a 3-4ft piece of florocarbon. Its cheaper to re-spool 100ft or 100yds of mono than the whole reel,about 300 yds. Some have dedicated rods and reels for every type of targeted species. ie..straight mono for yo yo fishing only.

a good knot should pass through rod guides with no resistence.
