Cool flipped the boat at LJ

Yep, I did it. Shoulda just gotten out instead of riding the surf in. Unleashed rods and all. Lost 3 but managed to find 2 of em.
In the unlikely chance that someone found my favorite iron stick, its a 6'ft seeker graphite with a very nice torium 20 reel, AND furthermore it has a very nice brand new yellow butterfly jig attached.

This was at the La jolla landing........

Good luck everyone!!!

Bummer Chris. With all the gear lost at the shores, it is surprising that anyone can launch there without tripping over something. Somewhere out there are dozens of rods, tackle boxes, bait tanks, mirage drives and who knows what else. Where does all this gear go?

On to the important question. Did you catch anything?

Bob

it goes into the geologic record of humans chasing fish on plastic boats!
just like your feet if you stand at the water edge and let the waves go in and out they bury themselves to become some part of a sandy silt stone on a mountain top in ten millions years for some archeology student to ponder.
so don't feel so bad,if your name was on it you might become famous as the remains of some long lost culture!
hopefully your name was on it!

Bummer

Sorry to hear Chris. I did the same a few weeks ago- I just hadn't admitted it yet

I'm not sure why, but I only leash things down 3 out of 5 times or so.. should probably be everytime. I landed in the dark the other night, and caught a wave in.. Put my feet out for extra drag which helped prevent the dreaded turn sideways, but you never know when things might surprise you out there.

Hope someone finds your rod.

Damn Chris.. That sucks. They surf was pretty dicey yesterday evening. Short interval surf, accompanied by a couple of thumpers. I made it out/in pretty unscathed, but I found myself too far inside for a set. It definitely kept me on my toes. I hope they find their way back to you.

Sorry to hear about that! It was pretty dicey for me as well yesterday, I got pretty wet landing, but luckily avoided the flip. Hopefully theres a chance it will wash up on shore and someone will turn it into the lifeguard station. You should definitely check there the next time you're at La Jolla.
(BTW I was the kid packing my tan Revo in the white F-150 next to you)

bummer about your lost stuff, but are you saying there is now a treble hooked iron somewhere in the surf zone?
Watch your feet fellows...

Actually, it was in the back of someone's truck as of 7:00 Sat morn.
I was getting my stuff ready to launch Sat morning while someone was walking their kayak out through the surf. He came back in with a very nice looking rod and Torium reel. He handed it off to someone else getting ready who put it in his truck.

Cool

Thanks for the heads up. It was pretty shallow but i just couldnt seem to spot it. Lets see if the person finding it cares about getting it back to me.....be an interesting study in human behaviour. Good luck out there guys. This was the rare landing where I forgot to leash up and actually should have. NEVER AGAIN.

We all learn that we are not perfect, I lost 4 rods and was in the bay. I know the heart break of loosing a good rod. From my flip over I always have my rod leashed now, If in LJ my gear is stowed, a little extra time is money not spent double. I have also donated one to LJ.
PS if you need new rods I have a rod building shop. Drop me an e-mail if you want.

A couple of weeks ago I was out there at about 3:30am and saw a guy dragging an odd metal detector over the sand in an ultra low tide. I would bet that is where some of that gear ended up.

wow, it really sucks to lose gear for sure...
I feel your pain, I have a Trinidad 14 on a Custom Gloomis out there somewhere...

as for crash landings...
some people...(and they shall remane nameless)...
have, on occasion, given me substantial amounts of grief for stowing my stuff even on the smallest of days...
it has been my experience that it IS and has been the smallest of days that will knock me out of my boat! guard down I guess...

so, to all the grief givers...
feel free to contunue to give me grief, go ahead and call me a wuss,
but when, not if, when I tip over in the surf...
my reels are still clean, safe, and happy stowed inside in a dry bag inside the yak and my rods just get a little sandy...
the biggest damage done is my hurt pride...
but hell, I am usually laughing so hard, dat don't matter either...

thanks for sharing your misadventure

That sucks! I hope it turns up if it was the one that someone found.

But if everyone took as long as Mr Yakrider here... we would have some serious landing traffic jams!

Sorry to hear about the spill.

I learned long ago that my Hobie is not a surfboard. They turn sideways quickly and you will get your face washed in close interval surf.

Given this knowledge I almost always use the peddles on my return and bungee them in the "up position as I near the shallow water"

Then step out and grab the stern to walk the kayak to shore.
---------------------------------

In very steep surf I have swam the boat in while on the stern handle. I am not the only one that has done this before.
