Years ago I wrapped a 700L for my 20lb bait stick. It was way too stiff and heavy for 20. I could barely pull hard enough with 20lb to even get a decent bend in the rod. I hated that rod and almost sold it until I fished 25lb on it. What a difference. OK so now it's my 25 and 30lb bait rod. You might want to invest in a 700XL if you want some thing for 20. Leave the 700L for 25-30. Since they're your buddy's rods you might want to try putting the 20lb reel you plan on using on the rod and giving it a good pull. You'll be able to tell if the rod feels too stiff. Mike

I fish 25 or 30 on my 700ML, I would definitely go to the L for 20#.
