And there are plenty of better local beers around than VB and New. We get a lot of Pike in the harbour. We call them smelly pike, smaller and great bait, either stripped or live... Last edited by Clarkos; 11-16-2011 at 02:48 PM. Reason: Can't spell |

Ours would make great bait if it was legal. Blacks love the smaller ones.

The fish looks like an Aussie version of Barracuda.

Bingo.
It's a Barracuda - Sphyraenus. Technically a Australian Barracuda Sphyraena Novaehollandiae. Ours is the Pacific Barracuda Sphyraena Argentea. From what I have read they are pretty much the same fish just classed different do to different populations, mainly do to distance and isolation. They eat the same to, edible, Good smoked, not the best..... ![]() Recently I read their Kingies are much closer genetically related to our Yellowtail then was previously believed, even though for some reason they get much larger. Could be it's actually the same barracuda and just has not been studied enough to change the species. "Snook" and "Pike" are just local common names for them. Kind of like us calling ours "Barries", "Slimers" or "Slime Sticks". Jim |
