yes. windansea is launchable, marine street too. just check the surf and if you're comfortable, you're there. it's a nice option since the launch at the shores is pretty much googan city with summer in full swing, plus the new lifeguard militia is pretty much the biggest bunch of pricks around.

plenty of north county spots to launch. del mar, pillbox etc...

Thanks! Glad to know others have tried it. Was thinking about launching from Windansea to avoid the crowds at the Shores, but was a little leery because of the shore break there being a newb and all. Will give it a shot soon.

Both LJ spots are launch-able. Seen kayaks launch from there while surfing from time to time.

Windan Sea does get crowded with surfers and beach goers especially during the day. Best bet imho is to launch between big rock and the pump house. The sand comes and goes around big swells epsecially during the winter. Also the shorebreak can sneak up on you during a set so watch for those. If you don't mind lugging your stuff down the stairs or cliff it's very do-able. Big Rock is the northern boundary of the S. LJ MLPA.

Marine St. you got access at the stairs and the small drop off at the end of Sea Ln. a block south. It can get crowded there also. Best bet is to launch north of the stairs to the reef at horseshoes. Again watch for the shorebreak during a good set.

Both beaches do drop off real fast within 5-10ft from shore. Visit both places during a low tide and take a mental note of the reef and where the waves break during a set. Sketchy launch compare to shores but the kelp is literally right there.

I haven't got my yak yet but has anyone launched from Torrey Pines state beach? The parking lot just east of the tracks looks kinda cool, just walk your yak under the railroad tracks and your on the beach.
How about Silver Strand state beach?

Finding a place that you can get your kayak to and successfully launch from is only half the battle. Each city is allowed to impose it's own restrictions on the beaches and near shore water along it's boundary. Some will not allow you to launch from certain areas (surfing and swimming beaches are examples). Others will not allow you to fish in other areas (near shore swimming areas and navigation channels are examples).

Yeah, Warning! the Lifeguards said they are going to be giving out citations for blowing thru the Stop sign where the street meets the sand...It's on the left(Doh!) if you've never seen it. Also, can't go faster that 5mph even when trying to float thru on the Fluffy days.
They are pushing to make it 4WD ONLY too!

And yeah, there are plenty of other launches in San Diego. They are nice because there is actually still open parking next to them.

Once I get the hang of this whole kayak thing, I'll be avoiding LJ Shores launch all together. Dbag lifeguards would just cause me to do something stupid.

Also be careful of how close you fish near some of the beaches!
Some of the life guards will swim out to you on their boards thinking they know everything and tell you to leave because your fishing some where you shouldn't be.

I got yelled at over the weekend for going threw the opening trying to keep from getting stuck in the sand. Lady Life guards yells, "Slow Down." Caught me off guard, but I slowed down. I think if we are respectful to the rules they too will be respectful to the users as well.
