The guys at OEX told me they don't run fuses anymore because it's just one more spot for possible corrosion. That being said, you can get some waterproof Buss fuse holders from West Marine or somewhere similar that should work if you do decide to run fuses.

My HDS came with one of the waterproof fuse holders, which I put up with the battery to keep dry and accessable. Notice the pack of extra fuses there just in case...

found scrap manual
it recommends 3 amp. unit is probably 4 -5 months old now , and i still don't have a fuse installed . like mentioned above , one more thing to go wrong . still debating on it . what i have used in past was something from pep boys. heavy duty mini bus fuse holder , that is pretty much water tight . marine grade. it runs about 4- 5 dollars . small investment , as opposed to something ugly happening like surging your unit . or worse the battery melting through the belly of the kayak.

Use the fuse...If you do get a short you'll be sorry! Just make sure you check and maintain everything, like you should do anyway, especially electronics. No matter how unlikely you think a short is in your particular application, it's still possible and with no protection....you are risking burning a hole right thru your kayak....
