Some great ideas! As for most of the places that are close, I live in San Diego It's easier just to leave from my house.
I am definately going to hit up lake cuyamaca, moreno and Amish Ed's spot. I have a 4WD jeep and it sounds like exactly what I am looking for. Maybe we can get a trip together early next year. It's hard for me to go to Mexico because of my job.

Now that it's cooling off you could give Salton Sea a try for Talipia and Corvina. Stay at the State Park.
