That thing looks too big and complex for an intestinal parasite. Was it loose in the stomach or was it embedded in the stomach lining? Was it in the gut? If it was loose in the stomach I'd think it is some thing the YT ate. It looks a bit digested. The larger end could be the remains of the skull and gill rakers. My best guess as to what it is would be a small ribbon fish. They're not common in So Cal but they are around. Mike

Did it have a backbone or any cartilagenous structure? Are you sure it's an invertebrate?

I can see segments, faintly, so definitely an Annelid, so probably a Polycheate of some type. But I don't see any parapodia, so I cant say for sure. I am taking invertebrate zoology next semester, so hang tight, ill get an answer...

It's definitely not a worm, but it is really cool. Especially since it came out of a yellow.
While the partial digestion makes it hard to see what it actually is, it's probably either a pipefish (I've seen yellows caught at the islands puke them up) or a baby snipe-eel, a deep water eel that comes towards the surface to feed at night. I've seen them washed up on the beach at Scripps. Either way, you're stoked! Congrats on the catch. -Noah www.facebook.com/yellowtailtagging |

Nice fish Gabe!
And very cool... ...thing you got there! ![]() I wonder what is it... It's funny, you always find things out there that make you raise your eyebrows. Last year we we picked up a blood worm looking thing on the surface... ...which was like 24" long and about an inch wide! ![]()
