Yellowfin tuna caught in Newport Bay; could this be the work of a developing El Niño?
YellowfinLast month this website published a story about odd whale sightings and other events in Southern California and Baja California waters, possibly related to a developing El Niño in the equatorial Pacific.

On Wednesday morning, a yellowfin tuna was captured inside Newport Bay by scientists with Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute.

Whether it’s related to a developing El Niño or not, it's a very unusual catch, and the type of catch generally associated with warm-water events such as El Niño.

The photo was posted on the Cousins Tackle Facebook page, with this introduction:

"If this isn't a sign of an 'El Niño' we don't know what is. This morning, Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute did their periodic scientific sampling inside Newport Bay. They came across this unusual find. A Yellowfin Tuna was found during their testing. Inside the bay! Where there is one, there are many more!"

The photo was shared by AFTCO - American Fishing Tackle Co., with these words:

“El Niño has been a hot topic here on the West Coast. This morning an interesting sign of great things to come was uncovered by Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute with this Yellowfin Tuna pulled while conducting scientific sampling inside the back bay of Newport Harbor, CA!”

Yellowfin tuna typically inhabit tropical and sub-tropical waters, and are rarely caught off Southern California, especially this early in the summer season.

That is, unless something very fishy is happening!
