Lets cut the BS and nonsense. Are these guys just stealing bugs?

This was a while ago but always comes to my mind when I hear stiff like this.

not sure but i think this happened to me last night at newport, my dad and i dropped our nets next to the rocks and 4 out of 6 went missing before the fist pull??!
