I don't know, I'm not an engineer. But it's not too hard to imagine, like Jorge said, crap that makes it past the pump will get stuck in the mesh, killing your bait first, then getting flushed back through the pump when you drain the water. I like the solid pvc solution. Turn it 90 degrees to drain. Keep it simple.

Besides, it seems like your problem is scales, not the drain. Always better to fix the cause than to treat the symptoms. Why are you getting so many scales off your bait? Something is wrong, scales = beat up bait.

Also, to drain the water you could just dump it out. It's just a bucket.

Biggest problem I've had is stuff clogging inside the pump, which is why I did this. I have a screen on my intake as well which minimizes most things coming through. Dumping it, I'm not saying I can't, but with the gopro, rods, 50 lbs of water, etc, it can get heavy.

Maybe its because of my 7.5 mph average on the water.

I mentioned this in another post

Actually, I think Andy posted this update . Hobie came up with a new screen for intake . It is not so fine as to clog rapidly , but I am hoping it has just enough filtration to prevent the dreaded sea grass from entering pump . I'm sure they did some good testing . Another horrible scenario is spending two or three hours to make 3 pieces , only to release them so you can clear the pump because of grass . . Is it only me ? The updated kit is around 10 bucks ?
