Thanks y'all for your replies. Very helpful...seems most people like to let out 75'+ feet.

Maybe I could have asked this question differently, such as "what is the minimum amount of line y'all let out, and how do you go about guessing the length when you can't see your mack in the water?"

You can always mark your line with dental floss so you have an exact length.
