That would depend on the frequency of the chirp sonar. Low frequency (50Khz) is better for deep water, and higher frequency (200khz) is better for shallower water. The best high end sonar boxes are all chirp today, it is a newer technology that uses multilple frequencies simultaneously to produce sharper detail than conventional sonar.
