Just got back from the guys at AVET (reel/rod seminar), they claim their reels have 8 bearings.
When I asked them "where?" They said that the handle has 2. I have never taken one apart yet, but I will on weds. |

OK I was thinking about that, The new rubber handles may have bearings. I own one , never tore it down. The new pdfs are going up soon according to Aleesa.

YEP!!! They have 2 bearings in the handle, they are sealed like the rest of the reel, not as smooth as some others but a reel (LOL) good idea for handle bearings.

Is this for a new Avet? I have 3 of my Avets open in front of me and there are only 6 bearings. Is the MXJ that much different than the MXL that it has 2 more bearings? I only have part #7- Spool bearing, #14 spool bearing,#17 brake bearing, #20 brake bearing, and two #24 drive shaft bearings. My reels are older so some have the sealed bearings and some have the blue plates.

The MXJ is a narrow MXL. The bearing issues are that Avet has finally switched to a servicable bearing. Blue rubber plates are easy to remove repack and fish. Older metal and some blue or very hard to service. If you can take a sharp point and easily flip up the rubber plate, it's new. If the plate is metal or the blue plate has a metal plate undere it - they are old. They are $5 a piece. |

OK, I'm a little slow, but now I got it.
![]() I have a mixture of both bearings as I have replaced them from time to time to keep them running like new. The outer bearings seem more prone to corrosion than any of the others. I did not realize that I could just repack some of the bearings myself, hmmm.... on the other hand $5 a bearing isn't so bad, because once the rust starts I will replace them anyway. I still have to say that I like my Avets, well made, reliable, easy to service (15 minute rebuilds), and great customer service at a great price! ![]() |
