When the topic comes up over there it usually generates a lot of entertaining reading with a bit of real info.
When I renewed my passport I got the card also, it helps when returning to the US by car.

Certainly bad things can happen to any one, any where, at any time. But in regards to an Americano traveling in Mexico, "just go and what's the worst that could happen" is really poor advice. Mike
