Jesus!! You guys sure do go hard on people on here. Not everyone is a professional, or educated on every species of fish. I'm new around here and this site has been my go to place to learn and prepare myself whenever I hit the water. I've never caught a bsb or wsb (never targeted these fish) and I rely heavily on post like this to learn so that I don't make the same mistakes. Therefore, I hate to see people become hesitant when posting threads like these. Makes me nervous thinking about posting my catches this season. Actually, makes me nervous posting this. Not here to stir things up, I just wanna fish
![]() Thanks for sharing. I learned a lot from this thread |

Bsb arent as rare as they used to be so issues like this will come up more frequently. Like another poster said; if you don't know what it is release it. Gently, not after hanging it in the air on a game clip.
Very small 10-16" BSBs look different than the fish in this foto. They are very stocky, have large fins in relation to the body size, and are a dark red to deep purple color. And I've caught these little guys under the Coronado bridge. We have 5 species of marine fish in so cal that you can not keep. Ever. White sharks, gulf grouper, broomtail grouper, BSB, and garabaldi. Some you'll see, most you never will, but know them. Mike |

Goodness
It's nice to know how many "experts" we have in the field of fishing. Some are passionate and some are just pricks. Hard to tell the difference now days

Absolutely no offense taken and thanks to the many who offered comments. Its good to get a lively, informative discussion going with humor, and a little trash talk and I expected no less from BWE. After over 20 yrs working in marine bio I was not 100% sure so if several fisherman learned to recognize and release the next junior BSB this one mistake may help save others. PS ; can you ID this species of “wreck fish”? |

Did I not read something and this isn't you who kept or put the fish on a game clip? Is it a pic of someone else?

You can check the teeth to determine if it is a bass or grouper. The bass will have rows of needle teeth like a largemouth bass, and a grouper will have singular conical teeth.

Have to be black sea bass considering the world record gulf grouper was just over a 100lbs. Those fish look heavier than that. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
