It's a long paddle to the Gulf from newport beach! You're better off driving to Texas to launch from there.

I think the name "red snapper" is being used to identify many kind of fishes. Sure, the warm-water loving red snappers are over there but what I'm talking about here is "pacific red snapper" (scientific name Lutjanus Peru).
