I don't even try to do surf launches in it, I can barely drag it over the sand when it is setup.

That said it is VERY nice for taking inexperienced anglers out. I used to have two 14's but I ended up having to chase the guests down as they had no idea on how to handle the kayak, drift, wind or locations on the GPS. The 17 makes it easy, "Have a seat, sit back and relax"

I've had mine out about 5 miles in a rain squall, no problem.
